A Replica Watch May Not Be a Ripoff
The term replica watch has at least two different meanings. Probably the first thing that comes to mind when replica watch is heard is a copy or "knock off" version of a upper end luxury watch. For years there has been a brisk trade in this type of watch. Someone who wishes to put forth the impression of a very successful persona but has a limited budget might purchase one of these replicas with the full knowledge that it is indeed not the real item but with the intent of claiming that it is indeed a genuine article.
The ability to give the impression of owning such a classic keeps the owner pleased. Perhaps a gambler or a sales representative may feel the need to make use of a replica. To the untrained eye or the casual observer the replica would not be noted as anything but original.
The second meaning of a replica watch usually relates to copies of famous watches that would not be available in mass quantities. Such a watch might be the Speedmaster which is a replica of the first watch worn on the moon by NASA astronauts.Certainly the knowledge that there would only be a very limited number of the actual watch would make it difficult for an individual to try to fool others into thinking that these watches were anything but replicas.
Replicas of this sort are still prized because of the history they represent and the average owner would not attempt to or need to try to present them as one of the originals. These kinds of replica watches are well known and accepted for what they are.
The first type of replica mentioned above can be troublesome in several ways. First such a watch might be purchased by a person who is fully aware that it is not an original. Even though the buyer is satisfied there is a problem with the original watch manufacturer.
These knockoff cheap watches take unfair advantage of the original manufacturers who have spent years building brand awareness and loyalty. Having the market flooded with fake name brand watches is not a pleasant situation for original watch makers.
A more serious problem arises when unscrupulous sellers attempt to sell a fake watch as an original. Those who are always looking for a bargain may be easily duped into believing they have purchased a classic only to discover later that the watch is nothing but a cheap copy.
There are features of these luxury watches that would aid an experienced buyer to detect a fake. However a novice buyer not familiar with an original may miss these details. For instance just the weight of the watch could be an indication of poor quality. Luxury watches are always made from heavy solid metals and are usually not coated. Scratches or worn area where the gold or silver are worn away are a sure indication of a fake.
Fake watches are often very light weight because of the inferior material used in their construction. A close look at the face of a watch will sometimes reveal poor construction.
Those who have experience with name brand watches can often watch the movement of the second hand and determine a fake. Certainly removing the back cover would quickly disclose shoddy construction. So you can see that the term replica watch is not necessarily a bad word or indicative of a bad product.
Watches produced as replicas and described as such are well received. The problems began when the knock off variety is represented as an original. This practice of course is not limited to the watch trade and seems to grow larger every year.
